‘Nashville’ is not like ‘Glee,’ say stars Sam Palladio and Clare Bowen
You’ll hear plenty of music on ABC’s juicy new soap, “Nashville,” but don’t expect the characters to burst into song at any given moment. There’s “a fair bit” of music on the show, says star Sam Palladio. Makes sense, since it’s about two feuding country superstars in the Music City. “The great thing about it is it’s not your ‘Glee’ or ‘Smash’ where a song kind of bursts out of thin air,” Palladio tells Zap2it. “It’s all very much based in reality, so if you get a piece of music it’s in a gig context, or it’s an open mic night at a bar.”
Palladio’s character, Gunnar, learned in the first episode that he has a musical connection with Clare Bowen’s Scarlet. While their relationship is innocent so far, Bowen says there’s potential for more. “They’re kindred spirits,” Bowen tells Zap2it. “Scarlet is a poet and a closet songwriter, I guess. They discover that they can write music together. You can’t do that with everybody, so there’s a really special relationship there — and there’s a little spark also. Anything can happen!”
Check out the video below for more of Palladio and Bowen’s thoughts on the series, including the joy of actually filming in Nashville and where they fall in the Team Rayna/Team Juliette debate.

‘Nashville’ stars Clare Bowen, Sam Palladio are fresh faces from outside US.
LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Two of the stars of the TV drama series “Nashville” were cast to play country singers, and neither is from this country. Clare Bowen made her way to “Nashville” via Australia, with her first stop in Los Angeles. “I came over for pilot season from Australia and got this wonderful script and said, “Please, can I go in for Scarlett? I just love her,” said Bowen. Actor Sam Palladio started his audition process in England. “My casting process was a crazy one of sending myself taped auditions from London from a little flat. I’d never been to the states. They liked what I did. I sent them some things of me playing and singing my guitar,” said Palladio.
“Nashville” is shot on location in the country music capital. “I think we’re portraying it in a really good light, and I think you get the real dynamics of the heart and warmth of the people,” said Palladio. “You couldn’t capture that magic in L.A. on a sound stage. It really does need to be filmed there.” After last week’s debut, their duet went to No. 5 on the iTunes country chart.

I added 3 photos from Behind the scenes of last night’s episode. Check them out below.

I added screencaps from episode 102: I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love with You). What a great episode that was! I love Scarlett/Gunnar but I also really like Scarlett/Avery, probably because I’m a huge Jonathan Jackson fan. haha. Anyhow, I also added screencaps of Clare promoting Daffodil Day back in 2010. I had them uploaded but never actually added them to the site. Enjoy.
In the hours after “Nashville” made its debut on ABC last Wednesday night, “If I Didn’t Know Better,” the dreamy Bluebird Cafe duet between doe-eyed waitress Scarlett and earnest bar staff worker Gunnar, had already become a real life chart hit.
It’s something Sam Palladio, the English actor and musician, who plays the country hopeful on the drama, wasn’t actually expecting.
“I think it was probably two hours after the premiere that a friend of mine – we were just having a celebratory drink – and she goes, ‘You know you’re at No. 30 on the iTunes country music chart with that song?’” Sam told AccessHollywood.com during a break from filming in the city. “[I said], ‘What are you talking about?’ I thought she was just joking.”
It was no joke at all. By Thursday morning, Sam’s duet with Australian actress and songbird Clare Bowen (Scarlett) leapt into the Top 20 on the all-genres iTunes chart and to No. 5 on the country chart — in both lists alongside cuts from another Bluebird Cafe discovery – Taylor Swift.
“It just hadn’t occurred to me — the power and the whole buzz that it suddenly created and of course, the byproduct of that was people downloading the track,” he said. “That just hadn’t come into my brain that [something like that] was gonna happen.”
Like the chart success, finding out he and co-star Clare (who Sam met for the first time not long after landing in Nashville to begin shooting the premiere) were a magical musical match was a surprise too.
“Our first meeting really was in the lobby of [a] hotel in Nashville right before we met [singer, songwriter and producer] Buddy Miller upstairs to sing through the song for the first time. Having never sung with Clare and [because the scene is] such an important thru-line for the piece – that was really daunting,” Sam explained. “It wasn’t until we sat in the room and Buddy sort of gritted his teeth – ‘cause it’s a tricky song — that we kind of both started singing and the harmonies crept in and [it was like], ‘Oh, wow, this is working. This is good!’ Something about the tone of our voices together just instantly worked, so we were both kind of looking at each other going, ‘Oh!’”
