Scarlett O’Connor is one of those characters on television that you can’t help but cheer on. The budding star on ABC’s Nashville is a poet-turned-songwriter with porcelain beauty and some serious pipes. On a show that features two larger-than-life female leads (played by Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere), Scarlett’s storyline of heartbreak and triumph is refreshing. And behind that likable everywoman is the quiet presence of 23-year-old actress Clare Bowen.
As she sits curled up on a weathered chair inside the Peter Nappi studio, it’s hard to tell where Clare Bowen the actress ends and Scarlett O’Connor begins. Long blonde ringlets, a second-hand dress. Even when she reveals a pronounced Australian accent, Scarlett’s drawl peeks through. “I got handed this script and I saw who wrote it and read the thing and just said, please can I just read for Scarlett? I don’t want to go in for anyone else, I loved it so much,” she recalls about her audition.
Both Bowen and her character share a love of storytelling and singing but there’s also the storyline. Scarlett is thrust into the spotlight almost by accident, thanks to a fellow musician. Bowen, meanwhile, attributes her current success to that same fate-driven momentum plus the guidance of several key people. And just like Scarlett, Bowen is on the fast track to breaking her own musical career. – Source: Nashville Lifestyles & Kristin Barlowe
Clare Bowen left Australia behind to sing on ‘Nashville’
When Cate Blanchett tells you to go to America to find your fortune, you pack your bags and go. Or in the case of Clare Bowen, the singer with the ethereal yet powerful voice on ABC’s “Nashville,” you sell your vintage dress collection to buy a plane ticket.
Now, Bowen, 23, is starring in her first TV series and is working on her first solo CD with T Bone Burnett, the Grammy-winning producer, “Nashville” musical supervisor and husband of its creator, Callie Khouri. How the petite, classically trained singer found her way to Tennessee to play waitress Scarlett O’Connor is a dramatic story that began in 2010, backstage at opening night of the rock musical “Spring Awakening,” an Australian production supervised by Blanchett. After Bowen moved to LA, it didn’t take long — she didn’t even have to make a Lifetime movie — for the Khouri’s “Nashville” script to land in her lap.
“I was two hours late for the casting because of the rain. I called and said, ‘I think I have to cancel. I don’t want to keep them waiting.’ And they said, ‘They’re waiting for you.’ So I went. I looked like a drowned rat. I was soaking wet. I sang and [the casting director] said, ‘I gotta get my camera.’ ”
Told to come back the next morning and sing a country song, Bowen met Khouri and her co-executive producer R.J. Cutler. “I guess it could have been intimidating but they were really nice,” she says. “So we sat there and talked for an hour and a half, making friends. And they said, ‘We need to see you tonight at a recording studio.’ I was actually going out on for a test on another project. I was about to sign the waiver that says you can’t go out on anything else if you go out for this test. I was at the desk with the pen in my hand when the phone rang and my manager said, ‘Don’t you sign anything. You have to go the studio right now go.’ The next morning they told me I had a job. And my whole life changed.”
Clare was on The View yesterday. She was awesome as always and her voice was just beautiful and angelic. Check out the interview and performance below as well as screencaps. I am working on Nashville screencaps and those will be up later today.

• 12/02/12: Big Machine Label Group Clare & Sam discuss Scarlett/Gunnar’s future. Listen.
Clare – Well, see we don’t actually get told that much. I prefer not to know very much because otherwise I end up playing the end at the beginning and I don’t like doing that. But anything can happen. This place is pretty magical. So you’ll just have to tune in.
Sam – There’s a definite development, I think, in Scarlett and Gunnar’s relationship but it goes all sorts of directions. It’s not going to be the obvious choice that I think ends. Yeah, you see Gunnar going through some difficult times a little bit further down the line and you see different lights and shades in all the characters.
Clare did an interview with Young Hollywood this past week. She chats about her role as Scarlett in the hit ABC drama “Nashville”! She discusses trading in her Australian accent for a Southern twang, names her biggest country music inspirations, and she tells her experience co-starring (and sometimes dueting) with Sam Palladio and Hayden Panettiere! I added a few random photos to the gallery as well
You wouldn’t know it from watching the show, but Nashville star Clare Bowen’s drawl is pure practice. The Australia native, who plays waitress-slash-reluctant-singer/songwriter Scarlett O’Connor on the show, tells EW that her father used to bring home movies like Song of the South and Fried Green Tomatoes when she was growing up, and she had a good ear for the country sound. “It’s always been my favorite accent,” she says.
Bowen also talks about Scarlett’s ongoing drama in her relationships with writing partner Gunner (U.K. native Sam Palladio) and her boyfriend on the show, Avery (Jonathan Jackson). But clearly, the drama stays on TV: It was also just announced that Bowen will join Palladrino for a Grand Ole Opry concert at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium this weekend.
Find out more about the impending love triangle on Nashville, and more on Bowen’s singing background in the video here!
